Driving in and around Ajaccio

Driving in and around Ajaccio

The city can be easily reached from Napoleon Bonaparte Airport in around 15 minutes if you are arriving by plane. Simply take the T21 road west – enjoying scenic coastal views as you go.

Driving in Ajaccio – and around Corsica in general – is relatively straightforward, even if you’re new to driving in France. Traffic is much quieter on the island compared to mainland cities, and roads are generally well maintained. However, there are some general rules you should pay close attention to.

Speed limits should be kept to at all times. On Corsica, these typically range from 50km/h in towns to 70km/h or 80km/h on rural roads and 110km/h on the major highways, but they can vary – so keep an eye on signs as you drive.

Another rule to remember is not to use your car horn in built-up areas in Corsica, and that dipped headlights are required if visibility is poor. This could include bad weather, during which you are also expected to lower your speed.

With a rental car in Ajaccio, you have the freedom to venture to a wide range of locations and attractions. The unspoilt village of Cargèse is just over an hour away via the D81, and its natural beauty is sure to take your breath away. With rugged mountains and beautiful bays, this is just one of the scenic spots at your fingertips as you journey around Corsica.

A quick guide to Ajaccio

A quick guide to Ajaccio

Rich in history and culture, Ajaccio is not to be overlooked. As the capital of Corsica, this quaint port city also offers more than first meets the eye.

Explore Ajaccio’s Old Town and stumble across an array of intriguing monuments, many of which are dedicated to Napoleon Bonaparte. Having been born in the city, Napoleon has left a clear mark on its streets, heritage and identity.

Here are just some of the best things you can do when you travel here.

Dine by the port

Gaze over the luxurious yachts and boats that reside at Ajaccio’s port. The sight is contrasted with the traditional charm of the town behind it, making for a fascinating mix.

Head to the port as the sun starts to set, creating a beautiful orange hue against the sparkling water. Once you’ve admired the striking view, you can sample some of the freshest seafood in the area. If that doesn’t tempt you, many restaurants close by offer plenty of other options to satisfy your tastebuds.

See the Cathedral of Ajaccio

Located in the heart of the city is the Cathedral of Our Lady of the Assumption of Ajaccio, a whimsical church of Baroque and Mannerist styles. Far from your ordinary European cathedral, its charming pale ochre front is framed by bold white pillars.

History enthusiasts will have a particular interest in this building, as Napoleon Bonaparte was baptised here. In fact, he was said to adore the cathedral so much that he supposedly mentioned it on his deathbed.

It’s well worth a visit regardless, as the majestic interior is sure to take your breath away. Inside the cathedral’s walls are beautiful paintings, high domed ceilings and an incredible marble altar.

Admire art at Fesch Museum

Housing a number of masterpieces, the Fesch Museum was established by Napoleon’s uncle, Joseph Fesch, who dreamed of creating an Institute of Arts and Sciences in Ajaccio – and donated around 1,000 pieces of art prior to his death.

There are a variety of beautiful paintings, sculptures and an abundance of items owned by Napoleon Bonaparte’s family here. If this is of particular interest to you, you’ll be awestruck by the Chapelle Fesch, which contains the tomb of Joseph Fesch and Letizia Romolino, Napoleon’s mother.

Whether you wish to learn more about Napoleon and his family or just to see some fantastic pieces of art, Fesch Museum is a must-visit when in Ajaccio.

Meet new friends at A Cupulatta

Explore beyond Ajaccio with a road trip to an attraction with a difference at A Cupulatta, near Vero.

Just over half an hour away by car via the T20, A Cupulatta is an animal sanctuary with a difference. Rather than furry creatures, it’s home to turtles and tortoises from five different continents.

They’re very well cared for, with carefully put together enclosures spanning more than two hectares. Here you’ll find more than 3,000 turtles of 150 different species to meet. You may even get to see some tiny babies hatch from their eggs at the hatchery and nursery, should you arrive at the right time.

Car rental in Ajaccio opens up all manner of possibilities for artistic, historic, culinary and natural exploration. Reserve direct today to discover port-side attractions and island wonders.
