Driving in and around Carcassonne

Carcassonne makes for a great base for road trips in France thanks to its scenic yet well-connected location. There are many great places to visit nearby, from famous French chateaux to remote parks and art galleries.

If you’re arriving at the airport, reaching the city is easy. Simply hop in your rental car and drive east on the D119 – the journey usually takes a little over 10 minutes. Central Carcassonne is a wonder of charming buildings – drive between rustic squares, then park your vehicle to wander down quaint side streets and find museums tucked between a range of international eateries.

The historic city’s northern portion is mainly home to religious landmarks, including the Carmelite church. Head to Place Carnot to find iconic fountains. This part of town utilizes a grid of one-way streets and is packed with heritage.

Further south, the restaurants give way to charming boutiques, the municipal theatre and museums dedicated to local history, including the life of famous poet Joe Bousquet. Some of Carcassonne’s best parking, meanwhile, is located near the Musée des Beaux-Arts.

To reach Cité de Carcassonne and the famous castle turrets, cross the Aude river and climb the hills at Rue Gustave Nadaud. There are plenty of convenient parking spaces at the top. Return to see Carcassonne by night by via Mirador Le Cite – it’s one of the best viewpoints around.

Carcassonne is surrounded by scenic routes to Toulouse, Beziers and nearby national parks. Try the D610 and D118 roads to see some beautiful views.

Speed limits on major highways are usually 130km/h in clear weather, but on the roads around Carcassonne you’re likely to find limits closer to 80km/h. Local roads are often 50km/h or lower – just check the signs for any changes.

A quick guide to Carcassonne

Charming Carcassonne is a historic city like no other. Many visitors are justly attracted to the world-famous castle, but there’s plenty more to see and do beyond.

Castle on the hill

Carcassonne is more than just its medieval fortress – though that’s still a key reason to visit this incredible part of France. La Cité is one of the largest citadels in Europe and boasts a minor basilica inside, plus many other treasures.

This UNESCO-listed wonder is an absolute must-see for history enthusiasts. Wander between castle walls that stretch for several kilometres and discover stories of battles, heroes and villains within the more than 50 towers. The walled city can date its origins back to the Gallo-Roman period and has survived incredibly well through the years.

Look out for the bust of Lady Carcas – the legendary princess who is said to have given the citadel its name. Then visit the Castle of the Counts to see the luxurious quarters where the local rulers lived. An on-site museum walks you through the many transformations that the fortress has seen.

There is even an open-air theatre inside the medieval city. Created in 1908, this stage has hosted the annual Festival de la Cité since 1957 every summer. Reserve your place to see a mixture of classical drama and modern music and dance at this vibrant event.

Townside treasures

The castle may be the star attraction, but Carcassonne’s nearby town is also brimming with excitement. Drive north of the Aude to relax and experience the essence of both modern and traditional France.

The Fine Arts Museum is small but well-formed, with paintings and ceramics dating back to the 17th century. There are also select contemporary exhibits tucked between the layers of heritage. The permanent collection is mainly made up of local works, so it is a great introduction to the region’s culture.

In between the theatres and nightspots you’ll find treasures like the museum dedicated to surrealist poet Joe Bousquet, while shopping in Carcassonne can also be a luxurious affair. Though tradition is the focus in the Cité, you’ll get a more varied experience by visiting the district of Bastide Saint Louis.

Curious canals

The Canal du Midi is one of France’s finest secret escapes. Take a boat ride on the waters or simply stroll along the banks for a romantic waterside walk.

The canals also run through some of the best countryside around. Head south on Route de Carcassonne to see rolling vines on the horizon.

Parks and lakes

Take a road trip out of the city to uncover the wonders of rural France. Lac de la Cavayère has become an unlikely attraction – this artificial lake built after a dam was constructed in 1988 is now something of a lively leisure hub. Sandy beaches are supervised by a lifeguard in the summer and there are also pedalos for hire. You’ll even find an acrobatic forest trail to explore.

Another unlikely attraction is Australian Park, where you can see native Australian animals and even take boomerang lessons. You’ll find it just a short drive south of the town.

With car rental in Carcassonne, you can discover even more of this incredible part of France. Reserve direct today.
