Driving in and around Nantes

Driving in and around Nantes

Nantes is a well-connected, vibrant city, with well-kept roads and convenient routes both internally and out to the rest of France.

Many bridges cross the Loire River, which is a major feature of the city, connecting up to the fascinating artistic neighbourhood of Ile de Nantes (or ‘Island of Nantes’). History enthusiasts meanwhile will find much to admire in the medieval quarter, with its fine Château des Ducs de Bretagne, which now houses the Nantes History Museum.

Nantes, which is twinned with its name-sake of Nantes in Quebec, is relatively simple to navigate and offers plenty of parking too. Beyond, there are numerous road adventures you can take.

Paris is around a three to four hour drive away if you’re keen to see it on your trip, though there is so much to see in closer proximity to Nantes you may struggle to fit it all in. In fact, some say Nantes is like a mini-Paris itself.

Nantes is the ideal point from which to explore the Loire Valley, one of France’s most adored areas with locals and visitors alike. Here you’ll find spectacular scenery, vineyards producing the finest of wines (just ensure you are parked up for the night if trying them), and more castles than you can possibly imagine. Driving is the best way to see it all and allow the idyllic countryside to unfold around you.

Speed limits will usually be clearly signed. The maximum in urban areas is typically 50km/h, 80km/h is common on rural roads, and 130km/h is often the limit on major highways known as ‘autoroutes’.

A quick guide to Nantes

A quick guide to Nantes

Nantes is a city that offers an authentic French experience through all the seasons.

Relax at pavement cafes, marvel at the traditional architecture and breathe in the serenity while overlooking the majestic River Loire. You’ll find unique attractions and typical cultural experiences across its 11 neighbourhoods. Only a 40-minute drive from the coast and on the doorstep of some of the country’s finest castles, car rental in Nantes is a great way to see it all.

Place Royale

A place to dwell, marvel and soak up the true atmosphere and soul of Nantes, the Royal Square is a real icon of the city.

Around the edges you’ll find typically French pavement cafes and eateries. An attractive focal point is created by the ornate fountain, which sits among the white, window-strewn building facades. This site was badly damaged during the Second World War – but has since been carefully restored.

Château des Ducs de Bretagne

The stunning Castle of the Dukes of Brittany is a major Nantes landmark and attraction.

Home to the history museum, as well as being an embodiment of the city’s towering medieval past itself with its tall towers, rounded turrets and defensive moat, restoration has brought the castle’s original magnificence back – and made it accessible to all.

Take a look inside or just admire the exterior and courtyard, which make for an enticing resting spot and meeting place for locals.

Machines de l’Île (Machines of the Island)

This intriguing attraction is an artistic project full of intricate, beautiful and fascinating machines.

Most famous for its spectacular mechanical elephant, which comes to life and offers rides to 50 passengers at a time, there is so much to see here. Other attractions include the Carousel of the Sea Worlds – a mechanical aquarium.

Created on the site of the city’s old shipyards, Machines de I’lle is representative of the successful drive to make Nantes a contemporary city of culture, where anything seems possible.

Nantes cathedral

A quintessential element of the city, the Nantes Cathedral of St Peter and St Paul is a delightful example of Gothic architecture.

The remarkable structure took almost 500 years to complete, and was finally finished in 1891. Its imposing towers can be seen across the city and are integral to its skyline, but be sure to pay a visit inside as well – the interior is as stunning as the exterior, packed with fine detailing and stained glass windows.

Nantes Botanic Garden

Nantes is a city alive with attractive green spaces as well as majestic buildings, including the Jardin des plantes (botanic garden). Home to more than 10,000 plant species and considered among the finest botanical gardens in France, its camellia collection is a particularly renowned attraction.

The Ile de Versailles Japanese garden is another highlight in the city, set on an artificial island in the Erdre River. This garden, featuring three Japanese-inspired buildings, is a special oasis.

Renting a car in Nantes opens up all of these possibilities and more. Reserve direct today and plan your French adventure.
