Driving in and around Strasbourg

Driving in and around Strasbourg

When driving in France, speed limits typically range from 50km/h in and around towns and cities to 80km/h on rural roads, while major highways known as ‘autoroutes’ carry limits of up to 130km/h. These are usually well signed.

Due to its historical status as a World Heritage site and bike-friendly nature, Strasbourg operates reduced speed limits for vehicles driving in its centre and has some pedestrian areas, as well as an environmental ‘ZCR’ zone. Simply ask our local team if you require more information about this.

If you need to find a car park and leave your rental car there when exploring Strasbourg, there are many convenient places to park around the city. The Gutenberg car park, for example, is situated within walking distance of many of Strasbourg’s main attractions and provides 24-hour access.

If you wish to explore a little further than the city itself, the Parc Naturel Regional des Vosges du Nord is a popular destination for nature lovers. Navigate the A4 highway north of Strasbourg and then travel north-west to reach this sprawling preserve featuring forests, medieval ruins and even more excitement to discover.

There are many highways that feed into Strasbourg, making it easy to explore the wider French region too. Strasbourg Airport is situated close to the A35 which feeds into the D1420 west, offering picturesque views of the French countryside and rolling green landscapes.

A quick guide to Strasbourg

A quick guide to Strasbourg

With traditional timber beam houses overlooking the Rhine river and bountiful gardens and floral arrangements, few cities are as scenic or relaxing.

Here are some of the top things to do. Simply hop in your rental car in Strasbourg and explore.

Climb to the top of Strasbourg cathedral

Strasbourg’s cathedral is renowned for its beauty. This spellbinding Gothic structure has stood for many centuries – and was the world’s tallest building for two of those.

You can climb 320 steps to reach a viewing platform that offers an incredible view over Strasbourg. You should even be able to see over the border into Germany if the weather is clear.

Head back inside to enjoy the stunning stained glass windows that date back to the 13th Century. Its rosette window is particularly beautiful, featuring an array of incredible colours that could rival Paris’s Notre Dame.

There is also an Astronomical Clock within the cathedral, which was created in the 1500s. At 12.30pm every day, you can witness a procession of figures moving around a small statue of Jesus.

Take a walk along the canal

This dreamy setting is perfect for a slow spring or summer stroll in the shade of the trees.

Enjoy the greenery, soak up the sounds of nature and watch boats glide by in the still water. Grab some traditional bretzels – tasty, salty dough twists - and some pastries to take along and enjoy. Fournil d’Asterlitz and Au Pain de Mon Grand Pere are two recommended spots to pick up a bite to eat.

Check out the annual light shows

Plan your trip between July and September to enjoy the annual light show that takes place after dark during these months.

The cathedral and the Barrage Vauban (a bridge over the river) are lit up with a spectacular display that changes each year. The light shows typically last around 10 minutes and take place throughout the evening, so you can take in these beautiful sights at your leisure.

Explore the La Petite-France district

This vibrant area of the city boasts plenty of restaurants, cafes and boutiques to enjoy on an afternoon.

Stop for a drink in a restaurant overlooking the river, sample the delicacies on offer in the many stores and cafes or pick up a souvenir to take home at the end of your trip.

Many of the buildings in this district were constructed way back in the 16th and 17th centuries and still stand proud today. You’ll also find the 14th Century towers here, which were constructed to protect the city in medieval times.

Take a boat tour

See the city from a whole other perspective with a boat tour along the canals around the old town, the ‘Grande Ile’, which is essentially an island.

Enjoy a relaxing ride overlooking the pretty buildings along the canal edge and take advantage of the open-top boats on sunnier days.

See a little more of the city and this gorgeous region with Hertz car rental in Strasbourg. Feel inspired and enjoy your trip to one of Europe’s most fascinating destinations.
