Driving in and around Dusseldorf

Dusseldorf is a tremendous city to discover, with its roads taking you past modern skyscrapers and historic palaces alike. Parking around the city is ample, with lots, garages and on-street options in abundance.

Ko-Bogen, in the centre of the city, is where high-end designer labels such as Burberry, Prada and Chanel – and a sprawling mall – entice you in from the store windows. There’s plenty of parking in this area, which gives you the luxury of browsing on foot.

It’s good to note that trams have right of way in Dusseldorf, so make sure you leave plenty of space if you’re travelling behind them. The speed limit is typically 50km/h unless stated otherwise, and you should also be aware that a Low Emission Zone (Umweltzone) operates in the city – just ask our helpful staff for information about any restrictions.

Around a 30-minute drive from the centre, the 18th century Schloss Benrath is a real Baroque delight, with its blush pink coating, marble floors, twinkling chandeliers and carved flourishes. Make the trip to admire the opulent palace and its extensive floral grounds.

If you’re looking to visit the neighbouring city of Cologne, there are several routes you can take, but the simplest is via the A57. The typical speed limit on major highways – known as ‘autobahns’ in Germany – is 130km/h.

Equally full of history and culture, in Cologne you can marvel at the twin-spired city cathedral, and the eye-catching pop art collection in Museum Ludwig – or find out more about its famous international export, Eau de Cologne, in Europe’s oldest perfume factory.

A quick guide to Dusseldorf

With its famous museums, vibrant cobbled-stone old town and modern skyline, this city has a lot to offer.

Here are just some of the great things you can experience when you rent a car in Dusseldorf.

Take in the beauty of the skyline

If you’re new to the city, a trip up the Rhine Tower – known locally as the ‘Rheinturm’ – offers a great introduction to the sights. Standing at 240 metres tall, the structure can be seen soaring above the landscape, and offers spectacular views across the area.

Take in the futuristic architecture of the MedienHafen below, set contrastingly against the traditional Old Town. There’s also a rotating restaurant on one of the viewing platform levels, so you can enjoy a relaxing dinner in a striking settingwhile enjoying even more unparalleled views

After getting to know the city from the top, venture back down to ground level to see the interesting architecture up close.

Just a short walk into the harbour you’ll find the iconic Gehry Buildings, or ‘Neuer Zollhof’. Designed by world-famous Canadian-born architect Frank Gehry, these marvels are made from stainless steel, white plaster and red bricks. They adopt a curved design so that the white and red buildings contrast each other, while the stainless steel mirrors the structures, bending the light into mind-boggling shapes.

Enjoy the floral Nordpark

Nordpark takes pride of place on the banks of the Rhine River and offers rolling landscapes of pruned hedges, colourful flower beds, ponds and shady evergreen trees.

Several themes split up the space, including a large lily garden, a family playground with an aqua park, and a Japanese Garden.

With elegant maples, koi fish ponds and authentic stone monuments, the beautiful Japanese Garden was gifted to the city in 1971 and is akin to those found in Japan. Stroll around the looping walkway and enjoy a moment of peace in this calming environment.

Visit a plethora of museums

From the movie industry to the city's history and the rise of ceramic art, there are a number of fantastic museums to discover in Dusseldorf.

Museum Kunstpalast is huge, with five permanent collections boasting art dating as far back as the Roman era. Hosting more than 70,000 artifacts, paintings, prints and sculptures, it includes work from renowned international and German artists.

Be in awe of the exquisite detail found in installations by the likes of Swiss creatives Gerda Steiner and Jorg Lenzlinger. There’s also a unique glass exhibit where you can marvel at thousands of pieces, from the Roman period through Art Nouveau to the present day.

Kunstsammlung meanwhile is a fantastic modern art museum that’s well worth dedicating some of your vacation time to. With two separate buildings, the K20 and K21, there are plenty of masterpieces to explore. Enjoy the large Picasso, Andy Warhol and Paul Klee collections, as well as the rolling exhibits.

With car rental in Dusseldorf, you can see all the best things that the city and wider region have to offer. Reserve direct today.
