Driving in and around Hamburg

Germany boasts well-maintained roads and breathtaking scenery, making it a fantastic country to drive around.

There are many parking options available to you in Hamburg. When in a built-up area, signs reading ‘Parkscheine’ (parking tickets) will direct you towards a machine to pay for your space.

Many German cities, including Hamburg, also have the option for you to use the EasyPark or Pango smartphone app. This allows you to pay for your parking using your phone, and you usually get a text message update when you have 15 minutes left.

This well-connected destination is also in a great position to head out and explore other neighbouring cities and areas of interest in the wider region.

For a perfect day trip, take your rental car from Hamburg and head to the fairytale town of Bremen.

Around 126 kilometres and an hour and fifteen minutes’ drive away, take the A1 southwest to this beautiful medieval gem. The Brothers Grimm fairy tale the ‘Town Musicians of Bremen’ is brought to life here with a striking sculpture. It’s said that rubbing the donkey’s leg on the statue brings luck, so be sure to bring yourself some good fortune before you leave.

Speed limits on German roads are usually well-signed, so be sure to keep an eye on these. When driving on the Autobahn (Germany’s high-speed highways) always keep to the right. If you need to overtake, do so by smoothly moving into the left lane, then move back to the right-hand side.

While visitors often think the Autobahn has no maximum speed limit, as certain stretches are unrestricted, many sections do – with 130km/h generally the maximum, unless signed otherwise. Even on unrestricted stretches, 130km/h is still the advised limit.

A quick guide to Hamburg

While Hamburg’s history is firmly associated with its port and harbour, there are many sides of this eclectic city to discover.

It is always evolving, making it one of the most exciting locations to visit in Europe. Whether you want to study the beautiful and historical architecture, marvel at a modern waterfront development or immerse yourself in art and culture, you won’t be disappointed.

Marvel at the City of Warehouses

The Speicherstadt is the world’s largest warehouse complex and is also a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Built on the banks of the Elbe river, the district spans more than 260,000 square metres and boasts striking Neo-Gothic brick architecture.

Many of the warehouses are now attractions, such as the Miniatur Wunderland with its captivating model railways. Some have remained storage spaces meanwhile, while others have been transformed into residential apartments.

You can either cross the canals and explore the area yourself, or reserve a guided tour for some expert insights.

Experience the contrast of HafenCity

While the modern architecture of the HafenCity contrasts with the Speicherstadt, it also harmonises to create a fabulous creative neighbourhood.

The HafenCity is the largest urban building project of the 21st century in Europe, comprised of grand high rises, thousands of stunning waterfront apartments, plus countless retail outlets and restaurants.

Its biggest focal point is the awe-inspiring Elbphilharmonie concert hall. Boasting space for more than 2,000 music lovers, the gigantic, awe-inspiring structure has to be seen to be believed.

Explore the museum mile

The ‘Kunstmeile’ or art mile is a fascinating collection of five highly-acclaimed art museums in Hamburg.

Lovers of culture should put this experience of painting, drawing, sculpture, photography and design to the top of their must-do list, and investing in a Kunstmeile pass will allow access to all five museums.

These establishments are the Kunstverein Hamburg, Bucerius Kunst Forum, Hamburger Kunsthalle, Deichtorhallen Hamburg and Museum für Kunst und Gewerbe Hamburg. They’re all within a short distance of one another, making it easy to move between the various museums too.

Visit the impressive Rathaus

Located in the Old Town of Hamburg, this magnificent City Hall boasts beautiful Neo-Renaissance architecture and is certainly worth a visit.

Simply marvel at the grandeur of the exterior while standing in the Italian-style square outside, or venture in for a closer look. Should you choose to head inside the building, there are often exhibitions on display and regular guided tours.

After you’ve explored, don’t miss a chance to see the Hygieia fountain up close. Located in the courtyard, it is named after the Greek goddess of health, and adds to the feeling of a true Renaissance city in the heart of Germany.

With car rental in Hamburg, all this and more awaits your discovery. Reserve direct today and start planning your adventure.
