Driving in and around Nuremberg

Nuremberg is well connected, with several major highways known as autobhans stemming from the B4R circular route that loops the city. This brings neighbouring locations within convenient reach, including the picture-perfect medieval town of Schwabach. Munich, meanwhile, is around two hours’ drive south on the A9 highway.

If you’re flying into the airport, it takes just 15-20 minutes depending on traffic to drive into the heart of Nuremburg.

In the centre of Nuremburg, as with most towns and cities, the speed limit is generally 50km/h. On the autobahn, the standard speed limit is 130km/h, although in some places there isn’t a maximum in place. Keep an eye on the signs to make sure you’re travelling within the limit.

Much of the old town is pedestrianised, with narrow cobbled streets and winding alleys. However, there are plenty of parking options close to the fortified walls.

Trams are also a regular feature of life in Nuremberg. They operate on the same route as cars – you must give way to them and should take extra care when they are nearby.

A number of renowned sights, including the infamous Nazi Party Rally Grounds, are located further out of town. Hiring a car in Nuremberg makes it easy to get there, taking around 20 minutes from the centre, depending on the traffic.

Nuremburg is also a popular pitstop before starting the famous scenic driving trail known as the Romantic Road. Spanning 350km, this picturesque route takes you through quaint towns, past rolling hills and through thick pine forests.

The official starting point of Würzburg is about 90 minutes’ drive west of Nuremburg via the A3. Hire a car in Nuremburg and enjoy a city break in this beautiful city before heading out on an eternally romantic adventure.

A quick guide to Nuremberg

Nuremberg is a fascinating destination, and there’s a wealth of attractions to enjoy during your time here.

Let the romance of the Bavarian old town charm you, marvel at relics of the Holy Roman Empire, and visit spellbinding museums. Renting a car in Nuremberg also means you can explore even more of this impressive region.

Old town charm

Enclosing the old town are the remains of the city’s fortified walls, first built in the 15th century. They successfully defended Nuremberg against countless attacks, through various battles – and you can still see the scars in the aged stone.

Venture into the heart of this historic district to admire the medieval architecture. Explore the cobbled streets, pause at the ornate 15th-century church standing in Lorenzer Platz square, and spot the brilliantly bizarre bronze statues peppered throughout the city.

Relax with a coffee in the main market square, centred around the gleaming gold Schöner Brunnen. Meaning the ‘Beautiful Fountain’, this local icon hails from the 14th century.

Empires, castles and battles

Discover relics of the Holy Roman Empire at the Imperial Castle of Nuremberg. Keeping watch over the old town, this fortress has become an emblem of the city. Explore the sprawling hilltop site, built in true Bavarian style, complete with suspended walkways, exposed wooden beams and red rooftops.

The castle itself has been turned into a museum, with incredible paintings and tapestries from the 16th and 17th centuries decorating the stone walls. Admire the Gothic interior of the Romanesque chapel, peer down into the Deep Well and see the city from above at the top of Sinwell Tower.

The Nazi Party Rally Grounds, meanwhile, now form a poignant relic of the country’s wartime history. Visit the original site in the Dutzendteich neighbourhood, a short drive out of the centre of Nuremberg.

Walking into the huge arena, built to accommodate 50,000 people, brings home the horrors of this dark period. The colossal walls, made out of brick, granite and marble, ring with memories of mass propaganda rallies.

Learn something new

Nuremberg has a diverse and exciting selection of museums. Whether you’re interested in transport, art or politics, you can enjoy a cultural afternoon in this learned city.

Indulge your inner child in the Spielzeugmuseum, a toy museum which spans more than 600 years of play-time history. Wander from room to room, past medieval figurines, shadow theatre displays and a retro Barbie collection. There’s even a prized collection of E.P. Lehmann toys, including the famous Lehmann Big Railway LGB trains.

Car fanatics will have serious motor envy at Merks Motor Museum, meanwhile, where more than 90 classic vehicles and motorcycles are on display – many in absolute prime, perfectly-polished condition. There are also a number of vintage telephones, radios and Triumph typewriters on display too, adding to the retro charm of the atmosphere.

Whether you’re planning a business trip, family vacation or romantic getaway, organise car rental in Nuremburg and discover this beautiful medieval pocket of Bavaria.
