Hertz car rental at Stuttgart Airport

Car rental at Stuttgart Airport opens up numerous possibilities, whether you’re travelling for work or for pleasure.

As an important economic hub, Stuttgart has long been a feature of the business travel map, but savvy leisure trippers now also recognise how much it has to offer. Located in the south-west of Germany, there are castles, valleys and vineyards on the very edges of the city.

The city has become known for its fine art and wine, the architecture and grandeur of its central square ‘Schlossplatz,’ its traditional beer festivals and hosting one of the country’s biggest Christmas markets. Stuttgart is also only an hour from the stunning Black Forest.

As the place where the car and motorbike are said to have been invented, and known as the ‘cradle of the automobile’ as a result, it seems almost rude not to drive!

Stuttgart is a city of car lovers, where prominent companies include Daimler and Porsche. It’s even home to the renowned Mercedes Benz and Porsche museums. So when you rent a car from Stuttgart Airport, it’s a seamless step to discovering the city and what lies close by.

Driving in and around Stuttgart

Driving in and around Stuttgart

Picking up a rental car in Stuttgart is the ultimate way to ensure you can be in charge of your travel arrangements. It means having the flexibility to travel when you want and also to access the many attractions that are within short reach of the city.

Travelling from Stuttgart Airport to the city centre is achieved via a quite straightforward route north on the B27. The A8 is within very close reach of the airport and runs east and west to various major destinations.

Around the city itself, be mindful of one-way systems and pedestrianized areas – which will be clearly signed. There are a number of parking lots and garages you can use if you need to leave your car and explore on foot, convenient for both business centres and cultural attractions.

The efficient German Autobahn highway/freeway system links Stuttgart to the rest of the country.

While some sections of the Autobahn are famously without speed limits, that is not the case for much of it – with a 130km/h maximum generally enforced and always advised. Speed limits are clearly marked. On local roads in the city and surrounding villages, this will typically be 50km/h.

It’s wise to brush up on German driving codes. On the Autobahn passing on the right is illegal and drivers should move out to the left only to overtake, and then move back in.

A quick guide to Stuttgart and beyond

A quick guide to Stuttgart and beyond

Stuttgart is a fascinating city packed with intriguing modern and historic architecture.

Not too far beyond it, there are many other attractions and sights to see too. Experience it all with car rental from Stuttgart Airport.

City sights

Stuttgart has multiple city centre attractions, not least the Schlossplatz Stuttgart – or Palace Square.

The hub of the city, the square is an ideal place to relax for a while and is within close reach of other popular sights. The pleasing and vast square features open lawns, the Jubilee Column, the New Palace and fountains that are lit at night. As well as being an architectural gem, the New Palace is also home to the Baden-Württemberg state government.

The Palace Square is often used for open-air concerts and is transformed each year for Stuttgart’s Summer Festival.

Shoppers will love Konigstrasse, which passes by the square and is one of Germany’s longest pedestrianised streets. The historic Königsbau arcade is also extremely attractive and packed with cafes and shops.

A similarly worthy building, the Old Castle, is home to Stuttgart’s Württemberg State Museum, which offers fascinating insights into the history of the local region. Also gaining a great deal of attention – and well worth a visit – are the highly thought of Mercedes Benz and Porsche museums.

Serene nature and epic heights

Those more interested in nature may prefer the Wilhelma botanic garden and zoo. It has around 9,000 animals, a famous coral fish collection and impressive orchid display to behold.

For stunning views across the whole of Stuttgart’s skyline and beyond, meanwhile, Stuttgart Television Tower is the place to be. At 217 metres tall, it offers unrivalled panoramic views over Stuttgart, the vineyards of the Neckar Valley and as far as the Black Forest in the distance.

Hohenzollern Castle

It would be difficult to argue that Hohenzollern Castle is anything other than one of the most impressive sights in Germany.

This picture-perfect hilltop fortress, around 70 km south of Stuttgart, is unforgettable to behold, and the views from it worth the visit on their own.

The partially four-lane B27 runs close to the foothills of the castle, which is open year-round, with guided tours also available. Many special events are also held there – just check for details before your visit.

Visit the university town of Tubingen

A trip on a quaint Stocherkahn boat through Tubingen makes for a memorable day out.

The prestigious university town has the Neckar River running through it, providing a picturesque spine, dotted with colourful and historic buildings. Narrow alleyways and pointed gables characterise the town, which has a beautifully restored medieval centre.

Car rental at Stuttgart Airport makes this entrancing city and surrounding area easily accessible. Reserve direct today and plan your trip.
