Driving in and around Lamezia

Formed from the unification of three towns – forward-thinking Sant’Eufemia Lamezia, medieval Nicastro and ancient Sambiase – Lamezia sits in the heart of Calabria. Surrounded by breathtaking landscapes, this area is a joy to explore with a rental car.

You’ll be able to find parking spots in Lamezia, but you’ll need to be aware of a few Italian parking rules before you arrive. On-street parking is permitted on the right-hand side of the road but parking on blue lines means you’ll have to pay or have a blue disc on display. Blue discs are available from the tourist office, banks and post offices. Streets with white lines means that parking is free, but be aware that yellow areas are reserved for disabled badge holders only.

It’s important to pay close attention to speed limit signage. Unless stated otherwise, the highways known as ‘autostrade’ have a limit of 130km/h, non-major highways are 110 km/h, many rural roads have a limit of 90km/h and the maximum in towns and cities is generally 50km/h.

If you’re thinking of heading out of Lamezia for the day, the small town of Tropea – only around an hour’s drive away – is absolutely not to be missed.

Leave Lamezia south on the SS109 and join the E45 at Rotoli, then the SS522 at Pizzo all the way to Tropea. This beautiful seaside resort is known for its historic clifftop and its fabulous beaches and turquoise water.

From here you can even get a boat out to Stromboli – an island with one of the world’s most active volcanoes. The boat journey takes just over an hour and a half.

A quick guide to Lamezia

Welcoming wellness-lovers seeking a restorative break and boasting a fascinating range of architecture and history to enjoy, this is an eclectic destination.

With a rental car from Lamezia, you can also explore the wider sun-soaked region of Calabria. This beautiful part of Italy is waiting for you to start your adventure, and here’s just some of what you can do.

Indulge in a thermal bath

Lamezia is a well-known location for health and wellness, and the thermal baths of Caronte are popular with visitors to the city.

The baths provide mud and sulphur mineral waters which flow at 39 degrees Celsius from the Caronte springs. Kick back, relax and let the therapeutic effects take hold.

Discover the past

The city has a fantastic offering for those interested in history, and there are plenty of attractions to visit.

Explore the Archaeological Museum, the Diocesan Museum and the Casa del Libro Antico – or ‘House of the Ancient Book’. The latter preserves and restores more than 2,500 important texts, while the Archaeological Museum reveals the history of the area.

You’ll be able to discover items from the Palaeolithic and Neolithic periods and even Sicilian-Norman ceramics from the 13th to 14th centuries. Whether you make it to one museum or all three, there’s a treasure trove of wonders to unearth in Lamezia.

Explore Lamezia’s medieval district

Nicastro was an historic town and now forms a majestic neighbourhood to the north of the city’s centre, brimming with points of interest and home to a fascinating Norman-Swabian castle.

Walk through the narrow streets, weaving your way up the slope to the fortress. Built by the Byzantines during the 9th century, the castle has undergone extensive archaeological excavation projects revealing previously undiscovered sections and intriguing secrets of the surrounding area.

Visit the statue of Frederick II

King Frederick II, known for his charm and his championing of the arts, has been immortalised here in the form of a bronze statue.

Frederick also supported bringing different cultures together. This is absolutely one of the most important monuments in Lamezia. Interestingly, the face and index finger of the statue point towards the castle. The statue was created by the artist Maurizio Carnevali before being subsequently donated to the city.

Marvel  at the majesty of the Cathedral of Santi Pietro e Paolo

Located in the centre of Lamezia Terme, this breathtaking cathedral was built in 1640 but was later restructured with its current neoclassical style.

The exterior is strikingly adorned with marble sculptures of Saints Peter and Paul. Green Calabrian marble has also been used for the font containing holy water, and be sure to take note of the stunning grand pipe organ.

Don’t forget to also use your time here to immerse yourself in the culinary culture of Calabria. Regional recipes make great use of vegetables and are packed with incredible, punchy flavours to tantalise your tastebuds.

With car rental in Lamezia, all this and more is at your fingertips. Reserve direct today and start planning your adventure.
