Algeciras lies at one end of the Autovía A-7, a major highway running down the coast of Spain. Beginning just north of Barcelona, it takes in some of Europe’s most renowned visitor attractions including Valencia and coastal cities such as Alicante and Almería. This route was built as a free alternative to the Autopista AP-7, a toll road that follows a similar path along Spain’s Mediterranean coast.

From Algeciras, you can use the A-7 to reach resorts on the Costa del Sol, including Marbella and Málaga, the birthplace of Pablo Picasso and a hugely popular tourist destination. Algeciras also lies less than 200km from Seville, the capital of the Andalucía region, which can be reached by taking the AP-4 and A-381 north out of the city. The A-381 also provides a link to the ancient port of Cádiz, around 100km north of Algeciras.

With a rental car, you’ll be able to explore destinations inland, including the mountaintop city of Ronda, just north of Marbella and accessible from Algeciras via the AP-7 and A-397.

Driving on Spain’s rural roads can often be a relaxing experience, but traffic builds up around the major cities, so allow plenty of time for your journey. Drivers in Spain use the right side of the road and overtake on the left, giving priority to traffic coming from their right at junctions and intersections. If you’re driving during the morning or evening rush hour, you may find the toll roads – Autopista – are quieter than the toll-free Autovía. The speed limit on the Autovía is lower, though, at 100km/h compared with 120km/h on the Autopista.

Central landmarks

The main attraction in the heart of Algeciras is Plaza Alta, a square in the old town that’s home to many lively cafes, stores and restaurants. You’ll also find here some of the city’s prettiest buildings, including the 18th century Church of Our Lady of the Palm (Iglesia de la Palma) and the Chapel of Our Lady of Europe (Capilla de Europa). There are also plenty of lively tapas bars around the square, which is adorned with colourful mosaics and makes a great place to relax with a coffee.

Not far away you will find Plaza Nuestra Señora, home to the city’s market. This is a perfect place to browse for local delicacies as well as buy clothing and souvenirs. See the city’s Moroccan influence on display in the traditional tea shops and bakeries dotted around this area. Soak up more of the city’s history and culture at the Municipal Museum of Algeciras, situated on the edge of the Parque de las Acacias.

Stretching all the way from the entrance of the port to the Rio Palmones, it offers fantastic views of Gibraltar across the bay. On a clear day, you can see all the way to Morocco.

Another popular choice among sun-seekers is Playa de San Gardia, also located west of the old town. This sheltered beach boasts excellent facilities including parasols and sun loungers for hire, while the children’s play areas and lifeguards on duty in the summer make it an excellent option if you’re travelling with little ones. Both beaches have parking lots where you can leave your rental car.

Take the cable car up to the viewing platform at 400 meters to see two continents stretching out before you - Europe to the north and Africa to the south. Don’t forget to look out for the wild Barbary macaques that famously populate this tiny territory, many of whom can be spotted from the cable car and at the top of the rock.
