Driving around Ibiza can be a real pleasure, with easy to navigate roads and stunning scenery along the way. Once you’re behind the wheel of your rental car you can head east on the E-20 highway towards Ibiza Town. It typically only takes around 10 minutes to reach this popular visitor destination, and you can enjoy the views of palm-lined streets and stunning white buildings as you do so.

Once you're in the centre, you’ll find a neat, uniform grid of roads. The beautiful Old Town area meanwhile, with its rustic, pastel-coloured buildings, pretty iron balconies and red-tiled roofs, is simply begging to be explored once you have parked up your car.

It is important to note when doing so that there are some rules to be aware of and colour coded curbs.

Yellow curbs mean parking is not allowed, blue curb and blue lines on the road mean that it is a pay to park area, or that you have a restricted time allowed for parking. Yellow curbs with blue lines on the road are loading areas and parking is not allowed during indicated times – look for a sign nearby. If the curb has no colour, it’s usually free to park there, but always check for signs.

If you’re heading outside of Ibiza town to see more of the island, or are staying elsewhere, it’s easy to get around from the airport – with much of the island reachable in less than an hour.

The E-20 changes into the E-10 and takes you to the quaint fishing town of Portinatx, while the C-731 cuts through the middle of the island winding through the countryside towards Sant Anton de Portmany. This is where you’ll find the Sunset Strip featuring cafes and bars to let your hair down.

In built-up areas expect speed limits of 50km/h while many rural roads are 90km/h and highways often feature a maximum speed of 120km/h. Always check signs however, as these can vary.

Plan a day at Cala d’Hort beach

This small but stunning beach on the south-west coast is so special it’s a good idea to head here early to get a parking space. Then you can find out why it’s the perfect location to spend a day sunning yourself – or wait until the evening to see the incredible sunset over the water

There are restaurants situated close by and beach bars too, so you can grab something to eat throughout the day.

See Es Vedra up close

While you’re in the area, check out this fascinating and iconic rock formation that rises out of the Mediterranean.

Es Vedra is a must-see while in Ibiza, and has a great sense of mystery surrounding it. There are suggestions that it is one of the most magnetic places in the world – literally as well as figuratively –  and there have even been stories of UFO sightings nearby.

Drive to the coast and find a viewpoint to see this spectacle from land, then – for an even better look – reserve a place on a boat tour to see the rocky island up close.

Explore Es Canar’s hippy market

Es Canar can be found on the eastern side of the island, and a visit here to see the renowned hippy market is well worthwhile.

The stalls set up on a Wednesday, just as they have done for decades. Wander through and enjoy live music, peruse the handmade jewellery and clothing, and soak up the chilled-out and always welcoming vibe.

Take a walk in Santa Eulalia des Riu

Just a short drive from Ibiza airport – about 25 minutes in your rental car – you’ll find Santa Eulalia des Riu promenade.

Here you can experience a stunning setting that boasts a little bit of everything Ibiza has to offer. It’s the perfect spot for a quieter moment, or serene evening, and makes for a gorgeous setting for a walk as the sun sets. Afterwards, you can find a cafe or bar to rest your feet.

Ca Na Ribes is a popular spot with a gorgeous courtyard garden, while Royalty Restaurant offers a more laid-back affair with tasty tapas and brunch on the menu.
