Speed limits

When driving in the UK, the speed limits will be displayed in mph. If no speed limit is shown, you should follow these rules:

• Highways – 70mph (112 km/h)
• Divided highways– 60mph (96 km/h)
• Residential roads – 30mph (48 km/h)

In more built-up areas, speed limits may be as low as 20mph (32 km/h). These areas will be marked by road signs displaying speed limits, so keep an eye out for these changing.

Some highways (known as motorways in England) have been transformed into smart highways, where there may be variable speed limits depending on road conditions. Variable speed limits will be displayed on overhead digital signs that change to reflect the current limit.

Parking in Chichester

Much of Chichester’s center is pedestrianized. However, there are several short and long-stay car parks inside the city walls with easy access to some of Chichester’s most popular spots.

Castle Market car park (PO19 1JW) is within easy reach of the city’s famous cathedral (PO19 1RP) and has over 800 spaces. There’s also plenty of roadside pay and display parking spaces around the city, which are typically charged by the hour.

Main roads in and out of Chichester

• The A27 runs through the south of Chichester and takes you west towards the port city of Southampton and east towards the seaside city of Brighton
• The M27 is the nearest motorway to Chichester and will take you towards Southampton and Portsmouth to the west
• The A3 will take you north towards the capital, London, a must see when you’re in the UK.

Chichester to Southampton Airport

• Take the A27 out of Chichester and head towards the M27
• Follow the M27 for 27.7km
• Take exit five to join the A335 in Hampshire
• Continue on the A335 towards the airport for 1.1km

Chichester to Goodwood motor circuit

If you’re visiting Chichester for the thrills of the Festival of Speed or Goodwood Revival, you’ll find the Goodwood motor circuit just a short drive away. The journey should take you less than ten minutes from the center of Chichester.

• Take Claypit Lane out of the city center to the west
• Join the A285 and continue for around 4km to reach the circuit
