Rent a car from Las Vegas Airport and you’ll find it’s just a short journey to the city centre via Interstate 15 (I-15). Las Vegas is generally a convenient city for driving, with well-maintained roads laid out in a grid system. The Las Vegas Strip forms the spine of the city. Drive along this six kilometre stretch, which runs along South Las Vegas Boulevard, and you’ll find five-star hotels and casinos galore. Some of the major routes through the city, including the Strip, can get busy during the morning and evening rush hour so it’s worth allowing plenty of time for your journey. Venture beyond the Strip to get a different perspective of the city. If you’re travelling with kids, head to the Adventuredome indoor theme park, where you’ll find rollercoasters, bumper cars and a video game arcade.

For high-octane thrills, the Stratosphere Hotel is the place to go – these extreme rides aren’t for the faint hearted.

If you’re after something a little more low-key, pay a visit to the amazing Neon Museum to see a colourful collection of former hotel and casino signs. Dating back to the 1930s, this vintage exhibit beautifully illustrates the history of the city.

If you’ve time to squeeze another museum in, make it the Mob Museum. Inside a revamped courthouse, you can learn more about the city’s links with organised crime.

Desert landscapes

With a rental car you’ll have the freedom to head outside Las Vegas and explore more of the surrounding area.

While there are plenty of conservation areas and parks to discover, the biggest draw here is the epic Grand Canyon. Drive through the dunes and cross the border into Arizona to experience one of the seven natural wonders of the world.

Its beauty is quite overwhelming, especially at sunset. Wander along the hiking trails and marvel at the soul-stirring views of the ancient red rocks. If you dare, head along the heart-pumping Skywalk, an exhilarating glass walkway jutting out from the rim of the canyon, with the bottom more than 2,000 feet below.
