The Airport is located in the Queens area of the city and gives visitors fantastic access to the whole of New York. It’s just a short drive across the water to Manhattan, home to major attractions including the Empire State Building, Metropolitan Museum of Art and Central Park.

The beaches of Long Island and the hip neighbourhoods of Brooklyn are also within easy reach. With a rental car, you’ll also have the freedom to experience wider New York state, heading towards some fantastic scenic sights such as Niagara Falls.

It’s easy to make a reservation with Hertz before you arrive. Browse our extensive collection of vehicles online and select the perfect car for your New York trip. We’ll have it ready and waiting for you when your flight lands.

Driving in and around New York

JFK Airport is located in Queens, around 19km south-east of Lower Manhattan. The JFK Expressway connects the airport with the Belt Parkway, which provides access to Brooklyn and Queens. You can also follow this route to Staten Island, or join Interstate 278 (I-278) towards Newark.

The airport lies at the starting point of I-678. This then leads north through Queens and across the East River. You can stay on this road if you want to reach the Bruckner Interchange located in the Bronx. From here you can join the Hutchinson River Parkway, which runs towards the border with Connecticut. I-678 also provides a connection to Grand Central Parkway, which runs to Long Island.

With car hire at JFK Airport you’ll also be well-placed to visit destinations such as Philadelphia, 170km south of the airport via I-95, or Boston which is 350km away along I-90. The capital of New York state, Albany, is 260km north of the airport along the Taconic State Parkway.

Manhattan is the busiest area of New York, particularly at peak travel times, so if you’re planning to drive around this part of the city, it’s worth planning your route in advance and allowing plenty of time for your journey. You will find plenty of parking garages around the city – there are many restrictions around on-street parking, even on streets with meters, so pay close attention to the signs.

Unlike many other parts of the US, in New York you cannot make a right turn on red, unless there is a sign indicating you may do so. You may also notice avenues where you’re not allowed to make a left turn during certain hours – this is designed to limit congestion. These should always be clearly signposted.

The speed limit in New York City is significantly lower than most other parts of the US. Throughout the city, unless otherwise stated, the speed limit you should follow is 25 mph (40 km/h).

A quick guide to New York and beyond

From the Statue of Liberty to Times Square, you’ll find an endless list of iconic landmarks in New York. Rent a car at JFK Airport and you can also head out of the city to other destinations on the East Coast.

City views

New York is home to some of the world’s most famous architecture and if you’ve got a head for heights, the One World Trade Center offers an incredible chance to see it all at once. At 541 metres high - 546, if you include the tip - this is the tallest building in the western hemisphere.

Hop onto a Sky Pod to reach the observatory 102 storeys up, where you can enjoy unbeatable views of the city skyline stretching out for miles before you. You can even step out onto the Sky Portal, a huge glass disc Hovering above the bustle of daily NYC life seemingly miles below your feet. It’s a stunning sight to behold.

Art of the matter

As well as its famous architecture, New York is home to some of the world’s most prestigious art galleries and museums. There’s often a line to get in at the Metropolitan Museum of Art, but it’s worth it for a look at its awe-inspiring collection of paintings, sculptures and much more. You could spend an entire day in the museum and still only scratch the surface of the wealth of highlights it has to offer.

Of course, there are many other art galleries in New York, but be sure to visit the Museum of Modern Art (MoMA) and the Guggenheim. MoMA is home to some of the most famous masterpieces ever committed to canvas, including Van Gogh’s Starry Night and Dali’s Persistence of Memory, while the Guggenheim boasts works by Kandinsky, Pollock and many more.

City oasis

No matter what time of year you’re visiting, no trip to New York is complete without seeing the icon that is Central Park. Row out onto the glass like lake to enjoy peaceful serenity in the centre of one of the largest city’s on the planet, take in the views from the hiking trails or watch the world go by at Sheep Meadow. The park is beautiful in all seasons and you’ll never be short of things to see.

In the summer, check out a free Shakespeare in the Park performance or, if you’re visiting during the winter months, grab your skates and head out onto Wollman Rink. There’s also a zoo, castle and European-style Conservatory Garden to explore - plus plenty of famous statues, including Alice in Wonderland and Balto the sled dog.

Hit the road

With car rental at JFK Airport, you’ll be able to get out of the city and explore other destinations in the state of New York. Its capital, Albany, is just a short drive north of NYC and well worth a visit if you have time during your stay.

Highlights include the majestic State Capitol Building, home to the Million Dollar Staircase, which took 14 years to build at a cost over a million dollars. This city is also home to the New York State Museum as well as the Albany Institute of History and Art.

Once you’ve explored all the sights, head to Washington Park to enjoy some peace and quiet by the lake. With car rental at JFK Airport, Albany and many other destinations are within easy reach during your time in New York.
