Driving in and around Myrtle Beach


From Myrtle Beach Airport, Highway 17 will take you directly into the heart of Horry County and the famous family resort, which shares its name with the airport. A simple grid layout makes it easy to get around the city by car, with the roads that run off sunny Ocean Boulevard ascending from First Avenue to 48th.

Kings Highway, or the Business Loop of Highway 17, travels right through the Grand Strand, all the way from the North Carolina state line to Georgetown. These roads can be congested during the summer months when more visitors come to the city, but you can avoid some of the traffic by using recently added connections to US Bypass 17 and South Carolina 31. Make sure you plan your route in advance and leave plenty of time for travel.

Another key route through Myrtle Beach is the Robert M Grissom Parkway, which runs north to south from the Airport all the way past 48th Avenue. From here, you can easily get to the Coastal Grand Myrtle Beach Mall and the Broadway at the Beach complex.

Charleston is just over 150km away via US 17, which continues along the coast to Savannah, Georgia. In the other direction, you can take US 17 east towards Wilmington and Jacksonville. The state capital, Columbia, is less than 220km from Myrtle Beach via US 378.

Hit the beach(es)

The white sandy beaches, lapped by the waves, along the South Carolina coast are without a doubt its main pull. With welcoming waters that are perfect in places for snorkelling and scuba diving, these family-friendly beaches have lifeguards on duty during the summer, plenty of parking and easy access to scores of stores and restaurants.

With car rental, you’ll be able to take your pick of beaches along the coast. For restaurants, shopping and attractions stick to the area around Myrtle Beach Boardwalk, or see what’s happening on Surfside. In the mood for something a little quieter? Head for Huntington Beach State Park, with its secluded stretches of sand and peaceful dunes. From the walkway, you can spot birds and wildlife, or take a walk around a Spanish-style castle.

Family fun

Opened in 2011, the SkyWheel is one of Myrtle Beach’s biggest attractions – in more ways than one. At 57 metres high, the Ferris wheel offers spectacular views of the coast and the ocean beyond.

The SkyWheel is part of the Family Kingdom Amusement Park, which also boasts a rollercoaster, carousel and go-karts, plus a water park and various rides catering specially to younger visitors. Entry is free but you’ll need to buy tickets for each ride, or purchase a wristband. Day passes are available for the water park. The park is open from late March to early October.

Golfer’s paradise

This picturesque part of South Carolina has more than 100 golf courses, many of them within easy reach in a rental car and ideal for those with a penchant for hitting the course. For ocean views, head to The Dunes Golf and Beach Club, where you can also enjoy spectacular marsh and lake scenery as you tackle the course.

If you’d rather work on your game where the whole family can have some fun, try Mount Atlanticus Miniature Golf, which boasts 36 holes across two courses, the Conch and the Minotaur. If you get a hole-in-one on the 19th hole, you’ll be rewarded with a lifetime pass. 

Back to nature

With Myrtle Beach Airport car rental, you’ll also be able to take the short drive to Waccamaw National Wildlife Refuge in Georgetown. This 30,000-acre site spans forests and wetlands and is home to migrating birds, fish and plenty of wildlife to spot.

Take a hike in the longleaf pine forests to spot deer, woodpeckers and foxes, or head for the wetlands to spot reptiles and amphibians up close. The Cox Ferry Lake Recreation Area offers excellent wildlife viewing spots, as well as trails for hiking and mountain biking.
