Driving in and around Jackson Hole

Magical scenery and natural tranquillity occupy every corner of the Jackson Hole valley, so car travel is a pleasure in every direction.

Head to the charming town of Jackson to find history in the wilderness. US-191 winds south from the airport to the historic town centre – you’ll pass the National Elk Refuge, Millers Butte and other popular mountain peaks on your journey.

Jackson is home to several top hotels and resorts for skiing enthusiasts, but some adventurers prefer to stay closer to the slopes. Jackson Hole Mountain Resort is accessible from Moose Wilson Road on the valley’s western slopes. Use the Teton Pass highway to cross Snake River, then cruise north and take a cable car to the peaks.

There are two more popular ski resorts in the Jackson Hole Valley – Snow King Mountain Resort and Grand Targhee Resort. The first is located on Jackson’s southern edge, while the latter sits deep in the western mountains.

It takes a little over one hour to reach the Grand Targhee Resort from Jackson. Head on to WY-22, then use ID-33 west to curve north. When you reach Driggs, head east on Ski Hill Road and into the heavenly mountains.

Lake Jackson frames the Jackson Hole Valley in the north. US-191 provides an easy route to the glistening waters.

Exploring Wyoming is a pleasure by road, especially in the beautiful western mountains. There are strict distracted driving laws in the Equality State, and the maximum legal speed limit is 80mph (128km/h).

Be aware that mountain highways have considerably lower limits – the maximum legal speed on US-191 drops to 40mph (64km/h) on curved stretches.

A quick guide to the Jackson Hole valley

Intriguing wildlife, stunning scenery and dreamlike snowy mountains are just some of the reasons to visit the Jackson Hole valley.

The local towns are brimming with culture, offering unique experiences and family fun. In this beautiful corner of western Wyoming, the cool skyline is broken up by the passionate soul of the communities who live here.

Hit the road to start ticking off your Jackson Hole itinerary.

Take to the slopes

Recent decades have seen an explosion in snow sport tourism in this striking valley. Once a vast wilderness where elk and bison ruled the plains, today the area is a leading North American ski destination.

Jackson Hole is known as an expert’s paradise, with countless daredevil slopes helping to project a thrilling image. Corbet’s Couloir is the most infamous, dubbed “America’s scariest ski run” by seasoned skiers who flock here to prove their pluck.

There are gentler slopes for beginners and families, but high snowfall and steep terrain create the ideal place to take your skiing to the next level. Grand Targhee is the best resort for intermediate skiers with a passion for power, while Snow King Mountain Resort has miles of thrilling racing ground.

Witness the wonders of nature

The Rocky Mountains are home to some of the best-loved attractions in North America. Each spot is unique, and the Wyoming Rockies are known for their jagged beauty. In the summer, lush warmth brings the valleys to life, creating top photo opportunities and breath-taking sights.

The Jackson Hole Valley is home to the National Elk Refuge. Rugged and packed with wildlife, these sprawling wilds have provided a sanctuary for one of America’s largest elk herds since 1912.

The luscious plains are also home to bison, trumpeter swans, bald eagles and even wolves. If the scenery and wildlife aren’t enough, you can even take a horse-drawn sleighride among the elk.

In the north, Jackson Lake is beautifully tranquil. There are many serene spots to soak up the views, including several dotted around charming Colter Bay Village.

The nearby Yellowstone National Park is home to even more natural treasures, including the largest collection of geyser hot springs in the world. These explosive chutes are mystical and dramatic. Check in with the National Park Service to see the latest eruption predictions to time your journey right.

Interact with history and culture in Jackson

If the natural landscape is the Jackson Hole valley’s number one attraction, unique Wyoming culture takes a close second place. In this isolated part of western America, centuries of history stand preserved and there are many museums to satisfy your curiosity.

The Jackson Hole Historical Society and Museum is a cozy collection of community exhibits, offering an ideal introduction to the local trades and cultures that transformed this rocky region. You can catch an informative talk or follow a walking tour through the traditional buildings in the town.

Head to Mormon Row Historic District to see history preserved on a larger scale. Tucked into the wilderness east of Moose, you’ll find iconic Moulton barns and chamber homesteads – all showcasing the history of early Mormon settlers.

The Jackson Hole Rodeo is a great way to experience the lasting legacy of the settlers’ culture. For more than 100 years, this legendary show has been rousing spirits throughout the valley.

You can dine in true Wyoming style on a traditional Chuckwagon trip or see a Wild West Show. The traditional Jackson Hole Shootout show is a local favourite, held at 6pm most summer evenings at Jackson Town Square.

From steep slopes to intriguing traditions, the Jackson Hole valley is filled with treats. Choose car rental from Jackson Hole Airport to discover more of the untamed American West.
