Driving in and around Hawaii

Driving is a dream in this tropical part of the US. Highways wind past pristine shorelines and lush jungle – gaze out of the window and you’ll be greeted with views of the glittering ocean, dense rainforest and ancient lava fields. Rent a car in Hawaii and you can enjoy all this and more.
As you might expect, driving here is a little different to other US states, with fewer highways and more rural roads. The only Interstate Routes in Hawaii are found on the island of Oahu. The busiest is the H-1, an east to west route across the south of the island that links Honolulu with more remote spots.

The other Interstate highways are H-2, which runs from north to south, and H-3 and H-210, both of which are found on the southern part of the island.
Some of Oahu’s major roads, including those in and around Honolulu, can get busy during the morning and evening rush hour. But elsewhere on the islands, you’re likely to find the roads are much quieter. Most roads are generally in good condition and well-signposted and driving is a laidback experience.

Scenic routes can be found on every island in Hawaii. If you’re visiting Maui, the famous Road to Hana is a must-do. This breathtaking stretch snakes along the east side of the island down to the south, passing thundering waterfalls and rugged cliffs along the way. Equally magnificent is Pali Highway in Oahu – you’ll roll past misty mountains and verdant valleys, with plenty of places to stop off and soak up the views.

The speed limit on most highways in Hawaii is 55mph (88km/h), while on residential roads the maximum is capped at 25mph (40km/h). Just like the rest of the US, drivers here use the right-hand side of the road. It’s legal to turn right on a red light in Hawaii as long as you come to a complete stop first.

A quick guide to Hawaii

Hawaii has made a name for itself as the perfect beach destination and it’s easy to see why. Sparkling aquamarine waters, soft white sand and swaying palm trees work together to create a harmonious setting. But there’s more to this state than quintessential coastal spots.

Capital culture

Begin your Hawaiian break at the state’s capital, Honolulu. Found on the island of Oahu, this laidback city is one of a kind. Here, high-rises share the skyline with ancient mountains and golden beaches neighbour pastel-hued hotels.

Fall into step with the laidback vibes of Honolulu by getting to grips with the local culture. Wander around the Museum of Art which houses an impressive collection of works from Japan and China, as well as contemporary pieces from across the Americas. Afterwards, make for Chinatown. This bustling neighbourhood has an intoxicating blend of noodle bars, temples and markets to discover.

Of course, no trip to Honolulu would be complete without visiting legendary Waikiki Beach. Famed for the mighty waves unfurling onto the shore, this coastal spot is the perfect place to go surfing. Back on land, take a stroll along the lively promenade and stay around to witness the beautiful Waikiki sunset.

Iconic landmarks

Beyond the state capital, you’ll find there are many attractions to discover. One of the most famous is Diamond Head, just a short drive from Honolulu. This historic volcanic cone has a hiking trail that ascends from the floor of its 300,000-year-old crater to the summit. Complete the steep ascent and you’ll be rewarded with incredible views of the city and Pacific Ocean.

Pearl Harbor Visitor Center is another must-see. This fascinating cluster of monuments and museums pays homage to those who lost their lives in the 1941 attack. Today you can still see the remains of the USS Arizona – it forms part of a poignant memorial site which is accessible to visitors via boat.

The Big Island

Intrepid adventurers should make for The Big Island, the largest in the state. Its topography is incredible and diverse, due to the number of different climates on the island. Here you’ll find mountains dusted in snow, gurgling volcanoes, misty rainforest and emerald green valleys.

Most impressive is the awe-inspiring Volcanoes National Park. Amble along the hiking trails and witness two active volcanoes – Kīlauea, which has been erupting almost continuously since 1983, and Mauna Loa, one of the largest volcanoes on earth. Beyond these wonders, there are lava tubes, volcanic craters, lava flows and sulphur banks to see.

For a spectacular coastal drive, motor along the Hamakua Heritage Corridor, which begins in the town of Hilo. This route takes in two of the island’s most famous waterfalls, the thundering Akaka Falls and Kahuna Falls, and at the end of your journey you’ll be treated to unforgettable panoramic views from the Waipio Valley Lookout.

Whether you’re planning to relax on the beach, take a driving tour or explore the volcanic landscapes, car rental in Hawaii will help you make the most of your time on these spectacular islands.
