A true jewel in Florida’s crown, the laidback destination of Fort Lauderdale lies along the southeastern coast of the Sunshine State, just north of Miami. Known as the ‘Venice of America’ because of its incredible 266km of canals, it also boasts some of the USA’s most beautiful sandy beaches.

There are so many attractions in and around this city that you may be wondering where to start. To help you decide, here’s an inspiring guide to the best things to do in Fort Lauderdale.

Fort Lauderdale Beach

Blessed with 11km of stunning coastline, the most popular section of the shore here is Fort Lauderdale Beach itself. This golden stretch is lined with palm trees and features soft white sand that leads down to the turquoise water. It’s known for its award-winning artistic wave wall, and popular beachfront promenade.

Lay down your towel and enjoy a good book in the sunshine, or take a dip in the ocean to cool off. If you fancy something more active, there are a range of water sports for you to try, such as windsurfing and jet skiing as well as scuba diving and snorkelling.

Grab a cold drink or some food at one of the restaurants and cafes close to the seafront, listen to the sound of the waves crashing against the shore, and soak up the fun vibe and serene ocean views.

Las Olas Boulevard

Las Olas Boulevard is often described as the heart of the city, and is the first stop for many visitors when they arrive in Fort Lauderdale.

It connects to the beach and has numerous restaurants and more than 120 shops lining both sides of the street, as well as art galleries and museums. You can also head here to find the city’s thriving nightlife once the sun sets, including clubs and live music events.

There’s on-street meter parking and various lots, including a seven-storey one at Riverside Hotel, so you can leave your car and wander along the boulevard, taking in the views and the sea air.

As you walk alongside the palm trees, you’ll come to the Intracoastal Waterway. Here you can cast your eyes over the city’s super yachts and million-dollar homes, getting a sense of Florida’s most luxurious lifestyles.

Swap Shop

The Swap Shop on Sunrise Blvd is a truly wonderful place to visit. In the evening you can watch the latest films from the comfort of your vehicle, as it transforms into a 14-screen drive-in cinema. You can bring along your own popcorn, or purchase snacks when you arrive.

The large site also includes a flea market during the day, both indoors and outside. More than 2,000 vendors sell pretty much everything you can imagine, from novelty items to video games, handbags and more. Browse the goods and purchase a souvenir or two, before returning to get a good spot for the movie.

Films change regularly, so check out what’s on and the times to find something that suits you.

Bonnet House Museum and Gardens

Step back in time and discover the history and culture of Fort Lauderdale at Bonnet House, which is on the National Register of Historic Places. It dates back to 1920 when Chicago artist Frederic Clay Bartlett created the property, where he mainly spent time there with his third wife, Evelyn Fortune Lilly.

You can explore the museum and art galleries, where paintings by the couple hang on the walls. Wander around the extraordinary grounds afterwards to discover five distinct ecosystems – and find out more about the house and its past by taking a guided tour. There is also a free parking lot for visitors that can be accessed south of Sunrise Boulevard.

Jungle Queen riverboat tours

There are various types of boat adventures available on the famous Jungle Queen riverboat, including a 90-minute sightseeing tour. You’ll travel down the New River on a narrated cruise, passing the homes of the rich and famous along Millionaire’s Row.

The cruises, which have been taking people up and down the river since 1935, depart from The Bahia Mar Yachting Centre.

Park your car nearby, board the boat, sit back, relax and enjoy the view as you learn more about the city from the water.

Hugh Taylor Birch State Park

Just a short drive from the city’s main beach is the Hugh Taylor Birch State Park. It’s home to a wealth of wildlife, including marsh rabbits, turtles and more than 200 species of birds. There’s also a mile-long freshwater lagoon, which you can canoe or paddle along.

It’s the perfect place for hiking, if you fancy exploring on foot, with two designated trails you can walk along or a paved road that’s better for cycling. Pack a picnic and stop for a bite to eat in the stunning natural surroundings.

Everglades Holiday Park

The Everglades National Park is the largest subtropical wilderness in the USA. Here you may be able to spot the rare and endangered animals that call the Everglades home, including the manatee, American crocodile and Florida panther.

At the Everglades Holiday Park, which is only half an hour’s drive from the centre of Fort Lauderdale, 29 acres of wetland spreads out far and wide, including a wildlife preserve and theme park.

Take an airboat tour through the Everglades and across the River of Grass, where you’ll see alligators and other exotic creatures. After this, you can even see live gator shows.or experience your very own animal encounter.

NSU Art Museum

Featuring thousands of pieces of 20th century art, the NSU Art Museum is a true cultural highlight of Florida.

The building, which was designed by local artist Edward Barnes, houses both permanent and temporary exhibitions – with the permanent collection including work by Latin American greats such as Frida Kahlo, alongside multicultural contemporary offerings, and the paintings of William J Glackens.

As well as the art itself, the venue also hosts regular lectures, screenings and performances, so be sure to keep an eye on upcoming events.

Car rental is the perfect way to get around Fort Lauderdale – and as well as discovering the city and the surrounding area at your own pace, it’s ideal for exploring more of Florida too.
